Much is being done, but more is needed. So, we work in this area of cultural change, providing examples, experimenting, using venture capital, as I mentioned before, to foster new ideas. Although we have only been pursuing this new mission for a short time, we have gained recognition from the sector in this regard and attracted new partners. This has made a lot of sense.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #bb9a61\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">The Racial Justice axis is fundamental given the gap we have in Brazil. When we have a country where the majority of the population is black and brown, but all rankings show that positions in the market are not being occupied by this population, we see the need to act on the racial issue. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #bb9a61\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Economist Eduardo Giannetti always points out that you cannot change a country when a child is born with a different set of opportunities. In other words, if we do not act on this issue, we will never end inequalities. So, for me, this is very profound. We cannot get used to inequalities. It is a matter of dignity.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p>In the democracy axes, we still have very few philanthropists working in this regard. For example, we have managed to establish an alliance to work in a structured way to improve the legal and tax infrastructure for philanthropy.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p>At first, it was understood that a better tax environment would attract more private social capital. The movement was started by Beja and immediately adopted by other institutions to engage in collaborative advocacy, working to promote changes in order to exempt donations from tax and other issues, such as those related to endowment funds.<\/p><p>We saw this action as a paradigm shift. Today, the alliance is firmly established, having secured a victory on the issue of thegift tax and gained the trust of many institutions.<\/p><p>In a short period of time, this leadership was recognized and today is everything we dream of, as it is a co-leadership in which several institutions actually work together in partnership, in a sense of trust and collective understanding.<\/p><p>Another example of a bolder initiative is the global partnership and creation of the Center for Exponential Change (CMe), which is the Brazilian hub of a global support network for System Orchestrators*. We understood that several governments were investing in new technologies and that there were models in India, China, and the United States, but in Brazil, more investment was<br \/>needed. We didn\u2019t know where to start, because it\u2019s not our area of expertise, but we used the capital to take that risk based on a model that was already being used in India, a center that had been created there and was looking for global partners. So Beja came in as a global partner of major philanthropies\u2014Nilekani Philanthropies (India), New Profit (US), Skoll Foundation (Global), Waverley Street Foundation (Global), and Yellowwoods Foundation (South Africa)\u2014from the Global South to co-found the Centre for Exponential Change [C4EC], a global network that now has hubs in South Africa, Rwanda, and India, in addition to Brazil. Another key point of this partnership is the establishment of the Global South as a priority.<\/p><p>Therefore, for me, this partnership is a breath of fresh air. In India, philanthropy and private social investment played an important role in building the technological infrastructure that enabled the government to create a digital identity system and a unified registry for its 1.4 billion inhabitants. It is stories like these that inspire us to think about what is possible here. So, we have the C4EC hub in Brazil, the CMe (Centro para Mudan\u00e7as Exponenciais), which has been created and is taking shape. It was very interesting to be able to discuss how we can transform our own territory, our own map, our own way of thinking and acting.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #bb9a61\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">The arrival of topics such as new longevity, with the creation of a <a href=\"https:\/\/novo.institutobeja.com\/en\/home_en\/laboratories\/#new-longevity-lab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">laboratory focused on this subject<\/a>, was another positive point. The country\u2019s pyramid has inverted, and the government itself has not paid much attention to it. There are so many public policies that need to be created or revisited based on intergenerational coexistence between children, adults, and the elderly. There are still several questions to be answered: Who is this elderly person? And it\u2019s not that it\u2019s impossible, but it\u2019s unlikely that some dialogues will take place, such as those concerning religiosity. We know that, with COP being held in Brazil, riverine and indigenous people, for example, had the opportunity to attend the Conference, through the exercise of democracy, but these conversations were not going to be debated in larger venues, with the reciprocity that occurred at Filantropando. This opportunity to bring up topics that were not on the official agenda of the meeting attracted partners who, naturally, would not have been interested in listening. Daniel Calarco, president of the Observat\u00f3rio Internacional da Juventude, for example, recalled that before the Conference, many people said that Brazil did not have the infrastructure to host a COP, questioning why it was in Bel\u00e9m, etc. And then he asked: \u201cBut is it really true that a city that hosts the largest religious event in the country, which is the C\u00edrio de Nazar\u00e9, with more than 2 million people every year, does not have the infrastructure, or is this the European way of thinking, expecting South America to host events like France does?\u201d <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #bb9a61\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">This reflects the stance of those who are unwilling to accept the conditions the country offers.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #bb9a61\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">At Filantropando, we were fortunate to not only promote conversations, but also bring local culture onto the boat, with bands sharing their experience of the territory with us, as well as food produced by the people of the territory. Many foreigners also participated in the conversations. The CEO of Black Jaguar Foundation, our partner, for example, is Dutch, and he pointed out: \u201cI haven\u2019t seen this happen anywhere else at COP. I\u2019m impressed. Se as rela\u00e7\u00f5es de confian\u00e7a n\u00e3o est\u00e3o estabelecidas, cada vez mais voc\u00ea quer controlar o uso do dinheiro. Por que eu falo que ele \u00e9 de risco? Porque a livre doa\u00e7\u00e3o pressup\u00f5e a transfer\u00eancia tamb\u00e9m do controle. Obviamente trabalhamos com metodologias, ferramentas e crit\u00e9rios que podem minimizar o risco, mas ele existe.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #333333\">O governo n\u00e3o pode arriscar capital porque precisa prestar contas do dinheiro dos impostos dos seus contribuintes; as empresas, na maioria das vezes, t\u00eam s\u00f3cios; as companhias abertas prestam contas para os seus investidores. Ent\u00e3o, para mim, o verdadeiro capital que pode tomar risco a servi\u00e7o da sociedade para experimentar e inovar, \u00e9 o capital da filantropia familiar. Tem muito sendo feito, mas \u00e9 preciso mais. Ent\u00e3o, a gente trabalha nesse lugar da mudan\u00e7a cultural, trazendo exemplos, fazendo experimenta\u00e7\u00e3o, usando o capital para risco, como falei antes, para fomentar novas ideias. Apesar de estarmos vivenciando a nova miss\u00e3o h\u00e1 pouco tempo, temos tido reconhecimento do setor nesse sentido e atra\u00eddo novos parceiros. Isso tem feito bastante sentido. <\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #bb9a61\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">J\u00e1 o Eixo de Justi\u00e7a Racial \u00e9 fundamental diante do <em>gap<\/em> que existe no Brasil. Quando temos um pa\u00eds em que a maioria da sua popula\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e9 preta e parda, por\u00e9m todos os rankings apontam que as posi\u00e7\u00f5es no mercado n\u00e3o est\u00e3o sendo ocupadas por essa popula\u00e7\u00e3o, vemos a necessidade de atuar na quest\u00e3o racial. O economista Eduardo Giannetti sempre destaca que n\u00e3o d\u00e1 para mudar um pa\u00eds quando uma crian\u00e7a j\u00e1 nasce com outra dimens\u00e3o de oportunidade, ou seja, se n\u00e3o atuarmos nesse tema, nunca vamos acabar com as desigualdades. Ent\u00e3o, para mim, isso \u00e9 muito profundo. N\u00e3o podemos nos acostumar com as desigualdades. \u00c9 uma quest\u00e3o de dignidade. <\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #bb9a61\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">No Eixo da Democracia, temos ainda pouqu\u00edssimos filantropos atuando nesse sentido. O que \u00e9 poss\u00edvel\ncitar em termos de avan\u00e7os conquistados pelo Instituto\ndesde sua cria\u00e7\u00e3o em 2021?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f8af21b elementor-widget elementor-widget-tp-adv-text-block\" data-id=\"f8af21b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"tp-adv-text-block.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"pt-plus-text-block-wrapper\" data-tp-gsap-textblock=\"\" ><div class=\"text_block_parallax\"><div class=\"pt_plus_adv_text_block \" ><div class=\"text-content-block\"><p><strong data-pm-slice=\"0 0 []\"><span style=\"color: #bb9a61\">Cristiane Sultani <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #bb9a61\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">- <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #bb9a61\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Temos algumas iniciativas interessantes para compartilhar nesse sentido. Conseguimos, por exemplo, estabelecer uma alian\u00e7a para atuar de forma estruturada na melhoria da infraestrutura jur\u00eddica e tribut\u00e1ria da filantropia. <\/span><\/span><\/p><p>No primeiro momento, era entendido que um melhor ambiente tribut\u00e1rio atrairia mais capital social privado. O movimento foi iniciado pelo Beja e imediatamente adotado por outras institui\u00e7\u00f5es, para fazer um <em>advocacy<\/em> colaborativo, trabalhando na promo\u00e7\u00e3o das mudan\u00e7as, a fim de isentar o imposto sobre doa\u00e7\u00e3o e outras quest\u00f5es, como em rela\u00e7\u00e3o aos fundos patrimoniais.<\/p><p>Vimos, nessa atua\u00e7\u00e3o, uma mudan\u00e7a de paradigma. Hoje, a Alian\u00e7a existe, foi vencedora na quest\u00e3o do imposto sobre doa\u00e7\u00e3o e ganhou corpo e confian\u00e7a de muitas institui\u00e7\u00f5es.<\/p><p>Num curto espa\u00e7o de tempo, essa lideran\u00e7a foi reconhecida e hoje \u00e9 tudo o que a gente sonha, pois \u00e9 uma colideran\u00e7a, na qual v\u00e1rias institui\u00e7\u00f5es atuam de fato em parceria, no sentido de confian\u00e7a e de entendimento coletivo.<\/p><p>Outro exemplo de iniciativa mais arrojada \u00e9 a parceria global e a cria\u00e7\u00e3o do Centro para Mudan\u00e7as Exponenciais [CMe], que \u00e9 o <em>hub<\/em> brasileiro de uma rede global de apoio para <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Orquestradores de Sistemas*<\/span> . Entendemos que v\u00e1rios governos estavam investindo em novas tecnologias e existiam modelos na \u00cdndia, na China e nos Estados Unidos, mas, no Brasil, era preciso mais investimento. N\u00e3o sab\u00edamos por onde come\u00e7ar, porque n\u00e3o \u00e9 uma expertise nossa, mas usamos o capital para tomar esse risco a partir de um modelo que j\u00e1 estava sendo utilizado na \u00cdndia, um centro que tinha nascido ali e estava buscando parceiros globais. Ent\u00e3o, o Beja entra como parceiro global de filantropias grandes \u2013 Nilekani Philanthropies (\u00cdndia), New Profit (EUA), Skoll Foundation (Global), Waverley Street Foundation (Global) e Yellowwoods Foundation (\u00c1frica do Sul) \u2013 a partir do Sul Global, para cofundar o Centre for Exponential Change [C4EC], essa rede global que hoje conta com <em>hubs<\/em> na \u00c1frica do Sul, Ruanda e \u00cdndia, al\u00e9m do Brasil. Outro grande ponto-chave dessa parceria \u00e9 o estabelecimento do Sul Global como prioridade.<\/p><p>Portanto, para mim, essa parceria \u00e9 uma grande oxigena\u00e7\u00e3o. Na \u00cdndia, a filantropia e o investimento social privado tiveram papel importante na constru\u00e7\u00e3o da infraestrutura de tecnologia para que o governo pudesse criar uma identidade digital e um cadastro \u00fanico dos seus 1,4 bilh\u00f5es de habitantes. S\u00e3o hist\u00f3rias como essas que nos inspiram a pensar o que \u00e9 poss\u00edvel aqui. Ent\u00e3o, estamos com o <em>hub<\/em> do C4EC no Brasil, o CMe (Centro para Mudan\u00e7as Exponenciais), criado e tomando corpo. Foi inclusive, a partir da primeira edi\u00e7\u00e3o do Filantropando, que criamos o movimento de <em>advocacy<\/em> para a legisla\u00e7\u00e3o tribut\u00e1ria hoje conhecido como Alian\u00e7a para o Fortalecimento da Sociedade Civil. Foi muito bom ouvir, dos tr\u00eas primeiros parceiros que participaram da jornada, que h\u00e1 um efeito multiplicador das a\u00e7\u00f5es, n\u00e3o s\u00f3 para a miss\u00e3o daquela institui\u00e7\u00e3o, mas sim na forma de pensar e de agir no campo, de como agora conseguem, em um congresso, uma confer\u00eancia ou em qualquer ambiente coletivo, fazer essas ideias serem discutidas. <\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #bb9a61\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Outro ponto bem importante foi a maturidade da rela\u00e7\u00e3o com o Instituto Toriba na curadoria do Filantropando a partir do imagin\u00e1rio e das possibilidades em conversas que parecem \u00f3bvias \u2013 mas acabam n\u00e3o acontecendo \u2013 e, tamb\u00e9m, a oportunidade da cria\u00e7\u00e3o desse espa\u00e7o de seguran\u00e7a para as conversas serem mantidas. Foi muito interessante poder discutir como podemos transformar o nosso pr\u00f3prio territ\u00f3rio, o nosso pr\u00f3prio mapa, a nossa pr\u00f3pria forma de pensar e de agir. <\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #bb9a61\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">A chegada de temas, como a nova longevidade, com a cria\u00e7\u00e3o do <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/novo.institutobeja.com\/laboratorios\/#longevidade\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Laborat\u00f3rio focado nesse assunto<\/a><\/strong> foi outro ponto positivo. A pir\u00e2mide do pa\u00eds inverteu e o pr\u00f3prio governo n\u00e3o prestou muita aten\u00e7\u00e3o. S\u00e3o tantas pol\u00edticas p\u00fablicas que precisam ser criadas ou revisitadas a partir da conviv\u00eancia intergeracional entre crian\u00e7as, adultos e idosos. H\u00e1 diversas perguntas ainda a serem respondidas: Que idoso \u00e9 esse? Sabemos que, sendo a COP no Brasil, os ribeirinhos e os ind\u00edgenas, por exemplo, tiveram a oportunidade de estar na Confer\u00eancia, pelo exerc\u00edcio da democracia, mas essas conversas tamb\u00e9m n\u00e3o seriam debatidas em recintos maiores, com a reciprocidade que ocorreu no Filantropando. Essa oportunidade de trazer tem\u00e1ticas que n\u00e3o estavam na agenda oficial do encontro atraiu parceiros que, naturalmente, n\u00e3o estariam interessados em ouvir. O Daniel Calarco, presidente do Observat\u00f3rio Internacional da Juventude, por exemplo, lembrou que, antes da Confer\u00eancia, muitas pessoas falavam que o Brasil n\u00e3o teria infraestrutura para receber uma COP, questionando o porqu\u00ea de ser em Bel\u00e9m etc. E a\u00ed, ele perguntou: \u201cMas ser\u00e1 mesmo que uma cidade que recebe o maior evento religioso do pa\u00eds, que \u00e9 o C\u00edrio de Nazar\u00e9, com mais de 2 milh\u00f5es de pessoas todos os anos, n\u00e3o tem infraestrutura ou ser\u00e1 que esse \u00e9 o pensamento europeu que est\u00e1 esperando que a Am\u00e9rica do Sul receba como a Fran\u00e7a?\u201d. Essa \u00e9 a disparidade daquelas pessoas que n\u00e3o est\u00e3o dispon\u00edveis para estar de acordo com o que o pa\u00eds oferece.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #bb9a61\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">No Filantropando, tivemos a felicidade de promover n\u00e3o s\u00f3 conversas, mas tamb\u00e9m trazer a cultura local para dentro do barco, contando com a presen\u00e7a de bandas para compartilhar conosco a experi\u00eancia do territ\u00f3rio, assim como as comidas produzidas pelas pessoas do territ\u00f3rio. Muitos estrangeiros participaram tamb\u00e9m das conversas. O CEO da Black Jaguar Foundation, nosso parceiro, por exemplo, \u00e9 um holand\u00eas, e ele destacou: \u201cN\u00e3o vi isso acontecer em nenhum outro lugar da COP. Estou impressionado. Of course, the concept goes far beyond just relating this connection between people. It needs to be updated to include nature and the planet. However, it was this wealth of care that motivated Cristiane Sultani to found Instituto Beja in 2021, and since then, the institution has sought to translate this philanthropy into systemic, courageous, and, above all, risk-taking action. \u201cWe were born to discuss and think together about new ways of acting and investing, through listening,\u201d points out Cristiane. Throughout its five-year history, Instituto Beja has sought to be innovative in its philanthropic activities. What do we mean when we refer to the organization\u2019s catalytic purpose? Cristiane Sultani &#8211; In Brazil, philanthropy is still considered small compared to international standards. And small does not simply mean in terms of the value of donated resources, but also in terms of its potential. Obviously, there are exceptions to the rule, but on average, the result still falls short of what is expected from the potential of philanthropy in Brazil, whether with resources from current philanthropists or with the entry of new ones. When we say that Beja has a catalytic purpose, we are referring to how these resources should be used systematically and efficiently to the point that they can multiply their effects, that is, attract new capital or new resources of different kinds to the field. On different occasions, you mention that, in view of the polycrisis that humanity is currently experiencing, it is necessary to use polycapital. What does that mean? Cristiane Sultani&#8211; The polycrisis is what we are currently experiencing: climate crisis, geopolitical wars, resource scarcity, the planet\u2019s inability to support the current number of people and the way resources are used today. Polycapital, on the other hand, is exactly how catalytic not only the use of financial resources can be, but also the other capitals that we all have: whether it be business capital, professional knowledge, networks, the ability to relate, institutional influence, etc. Sometimes, the most important thing is not Beja\u2019s financial resources for organizations, but the network, the contacts, the opening of channels that is done. This is where we place polycrisis and polycapital. You point out in your remarks that \u201cphilanthropic capital is venture capital. Beja, the [Institute] takes great risks in the name of learning. Because without experimentation, there is no innovation.\u201d Why do you say that this is venture capital? Cristiane Sultani &#8211; There is a discussion in philanthropy about control and lack of trust. So, regardless of the effort and impact caused by civil society organizations, philanthropy has power over the use of capital. If relationships of trust are not established, you increasingly want to control the use of money. Why do I say it is risky? Because free donation also presupposes the transfer of control. Obviously, we work with methodologies, tools, and criteria that can minimize risk, but it exists. The government cannot risk capital because it is accountable for its taxpayers\u2019 money; companies, in most cases, have partners; publicly traded companies are accountable to their investors. So, for me, the real capital that can take risks in the service of society to experiment and innovate is family philanthropy capital. That is why I insist that it must be efficient, but with more confidence in what is being done and more appetite for innovation. And how has this venture capital marked the Instituto Beja\u2019s journey since its creation?
